2000 SHOW GARDEN DESCRIPTIONS

An Occidental Garden
Consider this California woodland scene, consisting solely of rocks and native plants, for your own garden. The focal point is a dramatic dry waterfall rock arrangement. Using only natives, many of which are drought tolerant, results in a water-conserving garden. The design principles used here combine the designers' respect for Japanese garden aesthetics and their love for natural California landscape.

Urban Waves
An artist's residence with a curved metal roof and rounded walls is the backdrop for this contemporary garden. The two-tiered garden is flanked by walls of colorful concrete, and incorporates the artist's sense of whimsy through the use of color, texture and movement. Patios on each level allow for a glimpse into a private sanctuary filled with a collector's cache of plants and garden features.

Flowing Stillness - The Balance Of Power And Peace
Water cascades dramatically down the majestic falls, which emerge from the serene hillside cave. From the churning pool, the stream tumbles through the winding rapids, winding its way to the serenity of a time-sculpted Koi pond. Maples elegantly share spring's beauty, framing the quiet tea garden in the wisdom of silence. Bamboo embraces the simple balance of power and peace, delighting in the unassuming perfection felt by all who come and sit.

A Victorian Spring
The Victorian garden wakes from a long winter nap and bursts into color. As you pass through a gate in the picket fence, stroll by budding trees and spring-blooming plants. A soft gurgle and splash from the fountain, which had been silent over the long winter, welcomes you to sit on the porch and enjoy the fresh crisp air of spring.

Streets Of Europe
Everyone loves the streets of Europe, where all of life's activities take place. The central fountain is a gathering place for children and adults to play and ponder. Window boxes filled with blooming color are the "gardens" for the small living spaces of the vintage buildings. Vendors sell their wares on the streets, including fresh fruits, vegetables and flowers. This is where so many life-long romances begin…walking hand in hand through the streets of Europe.

The Sensuous Garden
Within this garden, your senses will be titillated…scent, texture and sound. The plants provide beautiful fragrance and have great texture in their foliage. Sound is created by the graceful stream that meanders through the garden. Texture can also be felt in the diverse landscape material: gravel, rocks and timber. This garden is equally appealing to those with hearing and sight difficulties, proving that gardens can be as interesting and wonderful to be in when they can be smelled, heard or felt, just as much as when they can be viewed.

Orchid Homestead
Pioneers of the orchid industry were not unlike their gold-seeking counterparts who blazed trails across the West. Both were visionaries who settled and lived with the beauty of nature. The rustic greenhouse is filled with unique orchids in bloom. Flowering trees and forest flora shelter cymbidium, dendrobium and masdevalia. A waterfall from out of the woods provides a refreshing place for hydrangea and ferns to flourish. The wicker rocker reminds us that someone special must inhabit this lush homestead.

Palacio Dos Orotoro - A Moorish Portuguese Court
Escape to our Moorish retreat where lush grasses and plants, soothing fountains, colorful tiles and majestic columns create a modern expression of Portugal's powerful heritage and tradition. Inspiration for this regal garden retreat lies in the Azulejo tile. The Azulejo art tradition, established in the fifteenth century when Christian and Islamic-Moorish cultures coexisted, is perhaps the most rich and vital expression of Portuguese culture. Retire to our regal retreat and banish your cares.

Mediterrania - A Collaborative Courtyard
Five Bay Area craftsmen from Campbell to Healdsburg have combined efforts to create this diverse courtyard, which represents five regions of the world. Mild, rainy winters and hot, dry summers are symbolic of the distinctive Mediterranean climate - a climate that favors year-round outdoor activity, an appreciation of nature and an interest in conservation. Trees silhouetted against the sky, multicolored flowers in the garden areas and in pots, whitewashed walls ablaze with bright colors paint only a fraction of the canvas.

Agua Dulce
Precious rainwater is harvested from rooftops. It travels through terra cotta and copper to bring lushness and abundance to this courtyard garden. Deep, cool cisterns nourish a cornucopia of Mediterraneans, grasses and herbs, all well suited to the long, sun-baked days in Agua Dulce.

Time Away
From time to time, we all must get away… and what more convenient place than your own garden. The smell of jasmine, the energy of the rushing water, and perhaps a frog or two singing their latest concerto makes for a calm, alluring environment that revitalizes you. Relax and read a good book, or have a romantic dinner for two. You can now get away without ever leaving home.

Elements
This is a contemporary garden where classic Mediterranean style meets California flair. Warm earth colors blend with a variety of plant textures and shapes. A raised patio of Sedona red flagstone is accented with deep blue tile and bordered by a moat on one edge, while an arbor offers dappled shade. The russet stucco wall is reminiscent of courtyards from New Mexico to Morocco. Rusted steel graces planter boxes on the patio, while stone planters at the entrance create a sense of enclosure.

A Wee Bit Of England
Our annual travels to England searching for the best gardens have led us to castles, cottages and grand manors. We wandered through the gardens of Capability Brown and Rosemary Verey and enjoyed the beautiful roses of Mottisfont and the extraordinary azaleas of Exbury. Our small cottage garden reflects the English tradition of colorful borders and stone fountains. If you look closely, you'll notice how many materials were recycled. We included old broken concrete for walls, used brick for paving and some old roses for memories.

Peacocks And Hollyhocks
I can still picture Nana Rose's garden in my mind…it was an eccentric collection of every plant that bore beautiful flowers. Her favorites were hollyhocks and this was evident throughout her garden. In the rear of the plot was a unique birdcage Grandpa had built out of scraps of metal he collected over the years. As a gift, he gave Nana a pair of peacocks. No one knows the meaning behind this gift, but you could see in her eyes that these birds were symbolic for a reason only known to them. I can still smell the wonderful flowers and hear the calls of the peacocks.

Sonoma Vineyard Terrace
This multi-level terrace garden creates a gracious outdoor living space to soothe the spirit. Classical in design yet rustic in structure, it utilizes natural hand-carved stone, and metal and wood surfaces with beautiful patinas. The upper terrace incorporates a dining area, fireplace and built-in kitchen. A dramatic fountain allows water to flow across the terraces and spill into the lap pool. The unusual specimen trees highlight and balance the unique design.
